Mulkirigala Rock Temple

Mulkirigala Temple, Sri Lanka

I was about 100 feet up a 300 feet climb when I stopped to take the photograph. There is a series of caves in the rocks above the temple that are fantastically decorated with sculptures and rock paintings. This temple, deep in the jungle, has historical importance as documents written on palm leaves were discovered here by British archaeologists in the early 1800s that led to unlocking the ancient Pali language from India. They also were the key to finally understanding that the religious artifacts the British were uncovering in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Burma were all part of one large and wide spread religion, Buddhism.

I like this image because it reminds me of every Joseph Conrad story I ever read.
