The Basket Weaver

One of the oldest handcrafts of African origin in the United States is the hand-woven basket. Woven from indigenous bulrush, a strong and supple grass that thrives in the sandy soil of the coastal region. Sweetgrass baskets and their craftswomen can be seen at the old City Market. This lady has taken refuge from the hot sun in the shadow of a large umbrella.
